Summary: Australian Gum trees on Te Anau foreshore

The large Australian Gum trees that line the lake frontage at Te Anau are reputed to have been planted about 100 years ago by my grandfather Thomas O’Brien who in those days was in partnership with his brother Michael O’Brien running a Nursery at Winton Southland. They would go out and plant for clients trees that they sold so it is possible that they went so far away as Te Anau as also rumoured within the family Grandmother O’Brien’s brother’s had a run at Te Anau. But that is as yet unproven .Naturally I would love to know if the rumour first mentioned by my father when we first visted Te Anau in 1951 is true. Those trees are not native to the area so someone has gone to the trouble of taking the plants all the way up to Te Anau.No mean feat 100 years ago.
